On Saturday September 11th, Language Link celebrated its 11th year in Russia. To mark the occasion, The Company hosted an all-staff party at the Bukhta Radosti Entertainment Complex located a few miles to the north of Moscow.
On Saturday, May 15th, Language Link sponsored Euro-day in Moscow. The event, advertised as a free concert for Muscovites, featured some of the best new vocal groups appearing on the Russian pop music scene today. Though originally scheduled for two venues, The Kremlin and Gorky Park, concerns over security eventually ruled out a city centre concert. Regardless, Euro-day proved to be a resounding success as, in addition to plenty of pop music, visitors were treated to helium balloons and whistles which were handed out by British Bobbys (at least they were dressed like British Bobbys). For those interested in applying for a position with Language Link, the task has been made easier. Prior to this writing, Language Link had one multi-use online application form. Though efficient, applicants often spent time filling in non-essential information, at least non-essential for the particular programme for which they were applying. The task of applying online has now been made easier. Seven distinct forms have been created; one for each of the seven job opportunities that Language Link has on offer.
After successfully running more than a dozen online English, French and German Olympiads in Russia, discussions are well underway to (take out) for Language Link to run an online English Olympiad in Mongolia. Alright, admittedly, Mongolia isn’t exactly on the other side of the world, but it is across the border, therefore international.
In September 2005, Language Link, in addition to Moscow, Yaroslavl, Tver and Volgograd, will take over RLUS representation in St. Petersburg and Petrozavodsk. A decision made earlier this year by Russian Language Undergraduate Studied of the UK to have Language Link coordinate all RLUS centres in Russia has been confirmed. Starting September, Language Link St. Petersburg will provide administrative and pastoral support for the hundred plus students who arrive in these two cities for 13, 18, 32 and 36 weeks of Russian language tuition.
This April has seen the launch of 'Vacation Revision', the latest opportunity for university students to benefit from Language Link teachers' experience and expertise in Academic Russian.
In December 2004, the Academic Board of Language Link Russia decided that the time had come to teach English online. Though there have been a few glitches (it would be online otherwise), students are now signing up and registering for all the bells and whistles that this distance learning tool has to offer: English courses for children, adults and business people, TOEFL Prep courses for study abroad hopefuls, slang/ business idioms of the day and so on. Learning English in Russia has taken on a whole new dimension. Sound interesting? Be our guest, and take a tour.
Ever since the Managing Director of Language Link decided to create the Department of Multimedia and Online Learning Solutions, a number of ideas have been either floated past his desk or tried out.
Not being one to say, “No” to anything nouveau, a lot of time has been spent investigating a number of nouveau ideas. One such idea, a Language Link WAP site appears to have found little favour with the MD. Word has it that it is only a matter of time before the boys and girls in R & D are told to ‘WAP it up”.
2005 is proving to be a ‘grand opening’ year for Language Link. Having moved Language Link’s corporate headquarters to the RGGU Business Center, the company has now followed this up by opening one new location and breaking ground on a second (knock on wood). In March, Language Link officially opened its all new Dolgoprudnye Centre for Language Study and in April signed a letter of intent to rent and renovate space in Balashika. Both cities are located in the suburbs of Moscow.
