Visa Application Procedures for UK Citizens

UK Citizens Applying for Russian Visas in the UK

If you are a British citizen and you are applying for a visa to Russia for the purpose of teaching English, then the following visa application procedures apply to you.

In order to start the process, you will need to fill in an application form. Though the application form can be obtained from most travel and visa agencies, the most efficient way is to simply fill in the online application form and then print it off. Of course this assumes that you have a printer available.

Once printed off (or simply filled in by hand), you have the choice of either submitting the application by post to the Russian Embassy or delivering it in person (or having it delivered by an accredited agency). Though the basic procedures are the same, please note that you can not get urgent processing i.e. same day service when sending your application by post.

Whether your application is posted or delivered by hand, you will need to include (or bring) the following items in order to procure a visa:

  1. Valid original 10-year passport (with at least one blank page).
  2. Recent passport-size photo (glued to the correct lower-right section of the application form.
  3. Letter of Invitation (Priglashenie)
  4. Introductory letter (aka Letter of Support) from your visa sponsor
  5. HIV (AIDS) Test Certificate
  6. Payment either in cash (GBP) if applying in person; or postal orders (GBP) made out to the ‘Russian Embassy’ if applying by post (see costs below)

If you are processing your visa by post, you will also need to include a pre-paid self-addressed Royal Mail Special Delivery envelope. To apply by post, you will need to send your completed application form and supporting documentation to:

Embassy of the Russian Federation, Consular Section, 5 Kensington Palace Gardens, London W8 4QS

Lastly, you should plan approximately two-and-one-half-weeks for your passport to be returned (not counting possible holidays which may fall within the time period).

If applying in person, you will be able to obtain your visa that same day, though it would be wise to verify this before submitting your documents. Though the consulate does not publish it on their site, delivery can be slowed due to heavy workload which can occur at certain times of the year.

Whereas same day service will cost GBP 95, visas obtained through the post cost GBP 45.

UK Citizens Applying for Russian Visas Overseas

If you are a UK Citizen and you are applying for a visa to Russia from any country in which you are not a resident (e.g. you are applying for a Russian Visa in Spain), then visa processing time will be approximately 10-14 days. Therefore, if you are planning to apply for your visa while traveling abroad, be sure to take this delay into mind when submitting your application for visa.

For more information, please visit the website of the Russian Consulate in London.
