General Information

Language Link's Study Russian in Russia programme offers its students a variety of different courses to choose from. We have designed courses for every level - from complete beginners to highly advanced - and for every interest. Students are tested on arrival and carefully placed according to their Russian language skills and experience to ensure effective learning. Group size ranges from two to six students.

All our courses are extremely flexible. Students may attend any course from two up to fifty-two weeks, and it is possible to study from six to twenty-five academic hours per week (group tuition is subject to availability; specialised courses are not always available as group tuition). Please note that one academic hour is 45 minutes long, and it is customary to study for at least 2 academic hours at a time, in accordance with the Russian state education system. We run lessons in the morning, afternoon and evening, and we do our best to provide each student with a timetable that fits in with their other commitments.

You may choose one or more courses from the list below. Please note that certain courses require prior knowledge of Russian.

Course Descriptions

  1. Intensive Russian

Course Goal: To rapidly integrate the student into the Russian speaking world through intensive study.

Description: Intensive Russian rapidly improves students' ability to speak and understand Russian by immersing them in active communication from the very first lesson. The large number of hours spent in the classroom (from 3 to 5 academic hours every day) means that students reach fluency in the minimum possible amount of time. The course is based on the main principle of intensive language instruction: a gradual but continual increase in the level of difficulty, with emphasis on mastering the most common constructions. An in-depth understanding of grammar and a wide active vocabulary are developed via structured learning and verbal drills. Students are also encouraged to read un-adapted Russian texts and develop their written Russian.

In Moscow we run regular short-term (2-4 week) group intensive courses for beginner to intermediate levels at special discounted rates.

    Levels: Beginner through advanced

Typical Timetable: 15 to 20 academic hours per week, 4 to 5 days per week.

  2. General Russian

Course Goal: To activate grammar knowledge via communication practice

Description: The aim of General Russian is to develop the practical skills needed to communicate effectively in a Russian-speaking environment, while simultaneously learning to understand the underlying structures of Russian grammar. Vocabulary work during the term is designed to help the student read Russian texts both with and without the help of a dictionary. Throughout the course, students work on their speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills.

    Levels: Beginner through advanced

  3. Conversational Russian

Course Goal: To enable students to communicate and converse competently in Russian.

Description:Conversational Russian includes much of the same core language tuition of the General Russian course, but has a particular focus on the oral and aural elements of Russian. Language Link's teachers involve students in discussions and dialogues from the very first class, to build their confidence and fluency. It is thus ideal for those who wish to quickly master the practical communication skills vital for their stay in Russia. Although the course emphasizes the spoken word, correct grammatical constructions and writing skills are also studied in the context of conversational topics, and students learn about Russian customs, traditions and etiquette.

    Levels: Beginner through advanced

  4. Business Russian

Course Goal: To increase the ability of businessmen and women to communicate effectively.

Description: The soul of all business is communication. Without it, business transactions come to a grinding halt, ideas falter, agreements crumble, and all due to miscommunication. To navigate business in Russia and mitigate miscommunications, an understanding of Russian is essential. The Business Russian course is designed for anyone working in a Russian business environment, or simply interested in learning Russian with a focus on the language of business. It provides a sound foundation of Russian language knowledge, giving foreign professionals the vocabulary, skills and confidence necessary to meet the daily demands of successful business. The course covers negotiating agreements, making contacts, business correspondence, giving presentations in Russian and much more. It includes basic business and commercial vocabularies, and tackles the language difficulties - both verbal and written - that businessmen and women frequently encounter in Russia.

    Levels: Pre-intermediate through advanced

  5. Vacation Revision in Moscow

Course Goal: To familiarize students with the culture and life of contemporary Russia, while introducing the basics of Conversational Russian or improving students' current Russian language proficiency.

  8. Exam Preparation

Course Goal:To prepare students to take and successfully pass the State Certificate examination of their chosen level

Description:Language Link offers an Exam Preparation course for students who wish to take a Test of Russian as a Foreign Language, otherwise known as a TORFL Certificate (or in Russian, ТРКИ). TORFL/ ТРКИ is the Russian Government's new national testing system for non-native speakers of Russian. There are certificates for various levels of language proficiency, ranging from basic (0) to native-speaker fluency (4). Levels 1 and 2 tend to be the most useful and achievable (levels 3 and 4 are generally only attempted by translators or specialists). Level 1 certifies ability to engage in professional activity in a Russian-language working environment, and Level 2 certifies an ability to communicate competently in Russian in all situations.

The Exam Preparation course focuses on acquiring the necessary skills to pass the test and obtain a certificate at the required level. Students work through practice papers for each part of the exam (Reading, Writing, Listening, Oral and Structural competence), and Language Link offers assistance in registering for the exam at one of the official testing centres. We recommend taking this course as individual lessons (it can be complemented by simultaneously attending a standard study programme to work on all aspects of language).

    Levels: Intermediate through advanced

Course Goal:To assist Christians in understanding the New Testament in Russian, and competently answer questions related to its themes. / To provide new converts to the Orthodox faith with a deeper understanding of the Russian Church, its history and traditions

In addition to grammar, students read excerpts from the Gospels, discuss related themes, give short presentations, translate hymns (at advanced level), listen to and retell short texts e.g., "What is Salvation", or "What does faith in God mean", etc.
