Using Song in the Classroom - Example 3

'I know you know' by Andre Gubin

I will be with you, with such loneliness

Every day, every night
You know yourself how you make me crazy
Only you can help me
I want to embrace you, I want to kiss you

Again and again it's love
But you again far from me, it's not easy to find you
Somewhere between spring and summer

I know you know that you will be mine again
Don't hurry to close your soul
Everything will be like you want
I ask you in the dark night don't tell me to go away

I will be like you want, like you wait
Only in this midnight tell me yes or no, no or yes
Why do you tell me lies?
Why do you ask me to go with you?
I am with you - only yours
Tell yourself that you like to be lonely
Somewhere between spring and summer

Again and again it's love
But you again far from me, it's not easy to find you
Somewhere between spring and summer

I know you know that you will be mine again
Don't hurry to close your soul
Everything will be like you want
I ask you in the dark night don't tell me to go away

This is a Russian pop song that the students should be familiar with, but probably not the English translation. Ideas include:

  • Present the lines of the chorus to the students, but they must be mixed up. Don't tell them what song it is, or that it is a song. Ask them to re-arrange the lines according to what they think sounds good.

  • Students sing along to the Russian version of the song, but they sing in English, only Andre is allowed to sing in Russian!

  • Translating songs - do they make sense when translated into English? And vice-versa, do English songs make sense if translated into Russian?

  • Students choose their favourite Russian song and write it in English.
