Using Song in the Classroom - Example 2

'Viva Forever' by The Spice Girls

Do you still remember, how we used to be
Feeling together, believe in whatever
My love has said to me
Both of us were dreamers
Young love in the sun
Felt like my Saviour, my spirit I gave you
We'd only just begun

Hasta Manana, always be mine

Vive forever, I'll be waiting
Everlasting, like the sun
Live forever, for the moment
Ever searching for the sun

Yes I still remember, every whispered word
The touch of your skin, giving life from within
Like a love song that I heard
Slipping through our fingers, like the sands of time
Promises made, every memory saved
Has reflections in my mind

Hasta Manana, always be mine

Vive forever, I'll be waiting
Everlasting, like the sun
Live forever, for the moment
Ever searching for the sun

But we're all alone now, was it just a dream
Feelings untold, they will never be sold
And the secret's safe with me

Hasta Manana, always be mine

Vive forever, I'll be waiting
Everlasting, like the sun
Live forever, for the moment
Ever searching for the sun

As with Example One, Viva Forever could have words removed and clues written for these.

Other ideas include:

  • Guessing the translations of the Spanish (Viva, Hasta Manana), trying to sing the song with these phrases in Russian instead.

  • Students write the story behind the song, who are the lovers mentioned? What happened between them?

  • Holiday romances - students discuss experiences of; write diaries about the events during the romance; discussion - are they a good or bad idea? role-playing a couple that meet up a year later - has anything changed?

  • Students compose their own love song

  • Reading between the lines, select phrases from the song, students explain them, e.g. searching for the sun, everlasting like the sun, etc…

  • Give students six lines from the song in a mixed-up order. They listen and order.

  • Students find examples of the present perfect, past perfect, and future continuous. They then try to order the events of the romance.
